Our verdict
Best for teams whose videos live or die by subtitles and versions: a collaborative browser editor with deep auto-subtitling and dubbing allowances, priced per member.

What Kapwing really costs
Kapwing does not sell video seconds; it sells a monthly credit pool that different features drain at printed rates. On Pro ($16/member/month billed annually, 1,000 credits), the same pool can be read as up to 1,000 minutes of auto-subtitling, up to 500 minutes of subtitle translation, up to 50 minutes of text-to-speech or up to 50 minutes of dubbing — alternative uses of one balance, not separate allowances you can all max out at once.
That makes the honest cost question 'which feature do you actually consume?' A subtitling-heavy team gets roughly a thousand minutes a month for $16 per member — about 1.6 cents a minute. A dubbing-heavy team gets fifty minutes for the same money — about 32 cents a minute. Both are fair; they are just different products wearing one price tag.
No single per-unit card is published because Kapwing's credits convert at different rates per feature (subtitling, translation, speech and dubbing all differ). Figures above are the 'up to' allowances printed on Kapwing's official pricing page, checked Nov 2026.
What is Kapwing?
Kapwing is a browser video editor built around collaboration. Projects live in a shared workspace where teammates edit the same video in real time, comment, and reuse a Brand Kit — closer to a shared document than to desktop editing software. On top of that editor sits a wide set of AI tools: auto-subtitling, subtitle translation, dubbing, text-to-speech, lip sync, clean audio and silence cutting, plus a newer prompt-to-draft feature that assembles a multi-layer project from an idea.
Its centre of gravity is re-versioning. Marketing and comms teams use Kapwing to take one recording and produce subtitled, dubbed, resized and captioned variants for every channel and market. The credit system reflects that: one monthly pool pays for subtitling minutes, dubbing minutes, text-to-speech and generative features, with the allowances printed plainly on the pricing page. Judge Kapwing by how much versioning you do — that is where it earns its per-member price.
How Kapwing works
- 1Start free and make a real project — exports are unlimited, so you can test the full editor; every export carries the watermark and caps at 720p and 4 minutes.
- 2Import footage by upload or by pasting a link (TikTok, YouTube and others are supported).
- 3Run auto-subtitling and fix the transcript — subtitle minutes are the credit spend to watch (10 minutes included free; up to 1,000/month on Pro).
- 4Add versions: translate subtitles (60+ languages), dub the video, or resize it for each platform.
- 5Invite the team into the workspace, apply the Brand Kit, and review together in real time.
- 6Export on a paid plan for watermark-free output — up to 4K and 2-hour projects on Pro.
Core features
Collaborative browser editor
Real-time multi-person editing, comments, project link sharing and a shared workspace — the feature teams actually stay for.
Auto-subtitling at scale
Automatic subtitles with SRT/VTT and transcript downloads. Allowances are the headline: up to 10 minutes free, 1,000 minutes/month on Pro, 4,000 on Business.
Dubbing and lip sync
Dub projects into other languages (up to 50 minutes/month on Pro, 200 on Business from the credit pool), with lip sync for persona and dubbed layers — lip sync sits on the Business tier in Kapwing's comparison.
Text-to-speech and voice clones
Generate narration from text layers; Business adds custom voice clones for a consistent presenter voice.
Smart cleanup tools
Clean Audio (noise and loudness), Smart Cut silence removal, background removers, stabilisation and scene detection — the repetitive jobs, automated.
AI drafting from a prompt
Kapwing's newer AI turns an idea into an editable, multi-layer project with timing and sound, which you then finish in the normal editor.
Brand Kit and templates
Saved logos, colours and custom fonts, plus a template library, so a team's tenth video looks like its first.
The free plan — the full truth
Kapwing's free plan is unusually honest about what it is: a drafting tier. The pricing page states unlimited exports with a watermark, 720p quality, videos up to 4 minutes, a 30-minute monthly cap on total exported time, 5GB of storage and 10 credits covering up to 10 minutes of auto-subtitling and 1 minute of text-to-speech. Project storage lasts only 3 days on free, which quietly enforces the same message: test here, publish elsewhere.
So the free plan is genuinely good for learning the editor and producing internal drafts — the watermark is a visible Kapwing mark in the corner of every export, and there is no free route around it. The first paid tier, Pro, removes the watermark on all projects and lifts exports to 4K and 2 hours. One thing we did not verify from Kapwing's own terms this session is the commercial-use position for free-plan output, so this review makes no claim about it; check Kapwing's terms if you plan to publish free exports commercially.
- • Every free export carries a Kapwing watermark — watermark-free exports are listed as 'None' for free in Kapwing's own comparison
- • 720p maximum and 4-minute maximum per export on free
- • 30 minutes of total exports per month on free
- • 10 credits: about 10 minutes of auto-subtitling or 1 minute of text-to-speech
- • Free project storage lasts 3 days; commercial use of free output not verified this session

Pros
- + Subtitling and translation allowances are deep and printed plainly
- + Real collaboration — shared workspace, real-time editing, Brand Kit
- + Watermark-free 4K exports from the first paid tier
- + Dubbing, lip sync, TTS and cleanup tools in the same editor as the timeline
- + Free plan lets you test the whole editor with unlimited (watermarked) exports
Cons
- − Per-member pricing multiplies fast for teams
- − Free tier is a draft tool: watermark, 720p, 4-minute and 30-minute monthly caps, 3-day storage
- − One credit pool for everything means heavy dubbing can starve subtitling
- − No free trial of paid plans, per Kapwing's pricing FAQ
Best for
- ✓ Marketing and comms teams making subtitled, multi-language versions
- ✓ Agencies producing client video collaboratively in the browser
- ✓ Educators and internal teams who need accessible, captioned video
- ✓ Creators whose main bottleneck is subtitling and resizing, not filming
Not ideal for
- ✕ Solo creators who resent per-member pricing for a one-person team
- ✕ Anyone needing a publishable free plan
- ✕ Editors who need an offline desktop timeline
Kapwing alternatives
See all alternatives →VEED is the closest catalogue alternative — a browser editor with strong subtitles and AI tools, from $18/month per user, with a watermarked free plan. Descript wins if your editing is mostly speech, thanks to transcript-based cutting. Canva is the pick if video is just one of many design outputs. And if your 'versioning' is specifically dubbing and translation of finished videos, compare Kapwing against the dedicated dubbing tools in the catalogue, such as Rask AI in this expansion.
Runway
Runway is one of the most complete creative AI video platforms, combining text and image-to-video generation with editing tools such as background changes, relighting and object removal. It is aimed at creators and teams who want generation and post-production in one workspace rather than a single-purpose generator.
Vizard converts long recordings into multiple short, captioned clips, detecting speakers and highlights automatically. It is popular with marketing teams, coaches and agencies that produce shorts from webinars, podcasts and meetings in bulk.
Descript
Descript records, transcribes and lets you edit video by deleting words from the transcript. Its AI tools remove filler words, clean studio sound and generate captions, making it a favourite of podcasters and talking-head creators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kapwing really free?
The editor is free to use with unlimited exports, but every free export is watermarked, capped at 720p and 4 minutes, with 30 minutes of exports a month and 3-day project storage. Publishing-quality output needs Pro.
How much does Kapwing cost per person?
Pro is $16 per member/month billed annually or $24 monthly; Business is $50 annually-billed or $64 monthly. Every workspace member bills separately.
What do Kapwing credits buy?
One pool pays for AI features: on Pro, 1,000 credits can be spent as up to 1,000 minutes of auto-subtitling, 500 minutes of subtitle translation, 50 minutes of text-to-speech or 50 minutes of dubbing — in any mixture.
Does Kapwing dub videos?
Yes. Dubbing is built in and metered from credits, and Business adds lip sync and custom voice clones for more convincing localised versions.
Kapwing or VEED?
Both are browser editors with AI subtitles. Kapwing's edge is collaboration and its printed, generous subtitling/dubbing allowances; VEED's edge is its broader AI tool shelf and avatar features. Price a real month of your own usage on both — per-member maths decides it.
Can I try Kapwing Pro before paying?
Kapwing's pricing FAQ says it does not currently offer a free trial of paid plans; the free plan is the trial, with watermarked exports.
