Our verdict

Best for creators and small studios who want generation and real editing control in one workspace — not just a clip generator, a place to finish the shot.

What Runway really costs

The sticker price is $12 a month — but on a credit-based tool, what you actually pay depends on how many generations you throw away, because rejected takes still burn credits. Our cost calculator budgets it exactly this way: effective monthly spend = entry plan × your retakes. Using Runway's published Gen-4.5 rate (12 credits per second) and the Standard plan's credit price, one finished minute of video works out to roughly:

$13.82

per finished minute · 1× retakes — first takes work

$27.65

per finished minute · 2× retakes — the typical case

$41.47

per finished minute · 3× retakes — heavy experimenting

Drafting on Gen-4 Turbo costs about half per second. These are comparison estimates from Runway's published credit rates and the Standard plan, checked Nov 2026 — not a quote. Run your own length, volume and retakes in the cost calculator.

What is Runway?

Runway is a browser-based AI video studio built around its own Gen-4 family of generation models. Where most AI video tools do one job — turn a prompt into a short clip — Runway tries to cover the whole job: you generate footage, then keep working on it in the same place with editing tools that can change backgrounds, relight a shot, remove objects and upscale the result. That combination is why it shows up so often in professional workflows, from independent filmmakers prototyping scenes to marketing teams producing social ads.

You can start from a text prompt, animate a still image, or restyle existing footage. Camera and motion controls let you direct a shot — panning, zooming, tracking — instead of accepting whatever the model gives you. The current Gen-4.5 model is the flagship for quality, with the faster Gen-4 Turbo for cheaper drafts. None of this makes Runway the simplest tool in its category, and its credit system takes a little learning. But if you want one workspace where a clip can be generated, fixed and finished, Runway is one of the few tools genuinely built for that.

How Runway works

  1. 1Create a free account — you get 125 one-time credits to test generation before paying anything.
  2. 2Pick a model and a mode: text-to-video for a prompt, image-to-video to animate a still, or video-to-video to restyle footage you already have.
  3. 3Write a specific prompt — subject, action, camera move and mood. Vague prompts waste credits; directed ones land faster.
  4. 4Generate a short draft first and review it honestly. Expect to reject some takes, and remember every generation, keeper or not, spends credits.
  5. 5Refine the best take with the editing tools — extend it, change the background, relight it, remove objects, or upscale it to 4K on a paid plan.
  6. 6Export the finished clip. Paid plans export without a watermark; free-plan exports carry one.

Core features

Text-to-video generation

Generate clips from written prompts with the Gen-4 family — the flagship Gen-4.5 model for the best quality, or Gen-4 Turbo when you need faster, cheaper drafts.

Image-to-video

Animate a still image into a moving shot, using your starting frame as the visual anchor. This is the most reliable way to control composition and subject.

Video editing and transformation

Change backgrounds, relight scenes, remove unwanted objects and restyle existing footage — fixing a shot instead of regenerating it from scratch.

Camera and motion controls

Direct pans, zooms and tracking moves and control how subjects move through a scene, so shots feel filmed rather than random.

4K upscaling

Upscale finished generations to 4K on paid plans, so a draft made cheaply at a lower setting can still end as a delivery-quality clip.

Voice, music and sound

Generate music, voice and sound effects inside the same workspace on Standard and above, and create a custom voice clone on the Pro plan.

Team workspaces and API

Shared projects and team features on higher plans, plus a developer API with pay-as-you-go credits for building generation into your own product.

The free plan — the full truth

Runway's free plan is a test drive, not a working budget. You get 125 credits, once — they are not topped up each month, although they never expire. At the flagship model's rate of 12 credits per second, that is roughly ten seconds of Gen-4.5 video in total; the faster Gen-4 Turbo stretches the same credits further. It is enough to learn the interface and see what the models can do. It is not enough to finish a real project.

Every video you export on the free plan carries a Runway watermark — Runway's own help centre is explicit about this, and there is no setting that turns it off without paying. The good news is that the other half of the usual free-plan trap is missing: Runway's terms do not restrict commercial use of what you generate, even on the free plan. So you may legally sell work you make for free — it will just carry Runway's name on it until you pay for a plan. Standard, from $12/month billed annually, is the first tier that removes the watermark.

  • • 125 credits, one time only — no monthly refresh (they never expire)
  • • Every free export carries a Runway watermark
  • • Roughly 10 seconds of flagship Gen-4.5 video from the whole free allowance
  • • 5GB of asset storage
  • • Commercial use is allowed — the watermark is the catch, not the licence

Pros

  • + Generation plus editing in one workspace — fix a shot instead of regenerating it
  • + Strong camera and motion control for directed, repeatable shots
  • + Commercial use allowed on every plan, including the free plan
  • + Paid plans start at $12/month billed annually and remove the watermark
  • + Mature, frequently updated platform with a developer API

Cons

  • − Free exports always carry a watermark — no exceptions and no workaround
  • − The free plan is 125 one-time credits, not a monthly allowance
  • − Credits burn per second, and rejected takes still cost you — retakes get expensive
  • − Standard and Pro credits do not roll over; unused credits reset each cycle
  • − More to learn than a simple prompt-and-download generator

Best for

  • ✓ Creators who want to direct shots, not just generate them
  • ✓ Small studios prototyping scenes, ads and concepts
  • ✓ Editors who want generation inside their post-production workflow
  • ✓ Developers building video generation into a product, via the API

Not ideal for

  • ✕ Anyone who needs a high volume of finished clips as cheaply as possible
  • ✕ Users who want a finished video from a script with no editing work at all
  • ✕ Anyone expecting a usable free plan for ongoing, month-after-month work

Runway alternatives

If Runway's credit bill is the problem, look at Kling AI first: its entry plan is cheaper in our checked pricing (from around $7–10/month, against $12 for Runway Standard) and it is known for strong motion quality per credit — what you give up is Runway's editing suite. If you mostly animate still images and want smooth, cinematic movement with less directing, Luma Dream Machine is the calmer tool. And if your clips are for social feeds, where effects matter more than control, Pika is quicker and more playful. All three are listed below with the same verified free-plan facts we publish for Runway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Runway free?

There is a free plan, but treat it as a trial: 125 one-time credits that never expire and are not refreshed monthly. Every free export carries a Runway watermark. For watermark-free work you need a paid plan, from $12/month billed annually.

Does Runway put a watermark on free videos?

Yes. Runway's help centre states that all free-plan videos carry a watermark, and there is no way to remove it on the free plan. Every paid plan removes it.

How much does one Runway video cost?

It depends on the model and your retakes. Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second; on Standard ($12/month for 625 credits) a finished 10-second clip costs about $2.30 in credits if the first take works — roughly $4.60 at two takes and $6.90 at three. Budget per finished clip, not per generation.

Can I use Runway videos commercially?

Yes. Runway's terms do not restrict commercial use of generated output, on paid plans or on the free plan. The free plan's catch is the visible watermark, not the licence — for client work you will still want a paid plan for clean exports.

Runway or Kling — which is cheaper?

Kling, on entry price: its starting plan is around $7–10/month in our checked pricing, against $12/month for Runway Standard, and Kling is known for value per credit. Runway earns its premium when you also use its editing tools and camera controls. Our cost calculator runs both tools with your own numbers.

Does Runway have an API?

Yes. Runway offers a developer API with pay-as-you-go credits, separate from the web app plans, so you can generate video inside your own product or pipeline.
