Our verdict
Best for narration-led creators who want voices with real emotional range — and a talking avatar when the script needs a face — without a camera or a studio.

What Typecast really costs
The sticker price is $5 a month — but the sticker is rarely the whole bill. Basic billed annually; 30,000 download credits/month, generation and playback unlimited.
On a credit-based plan, what you actually pay depends on how many generations you throw away, because rejected takes still burn credits. Budget per finished clip, not per generation.
We do not publish a per-unit figure for Typecast here: its rates vary by model and settings, and we only publish per-unit numbers that can be derived from an official rate card. The entry price above is from Typecast's public pricing, checked Nov 2026 — treat it as a floor, not a monthly total.

What is Typecast?
Typecast, from Neosapience, is an AI voice platform built on its SSFM speech model, now in its third generation with context-aware emotion. You type a script, pick from 700+ voice actors, and direct the performance — emotion, speed and dynamics are adjustable rather than baked in — then download the audio for your video, or use the plan's talking-avatar generations to put a face to the voice. It is used for narration, character voices, audiobooks, training and presenter-style clips.
Its billing shape is creator-friendly in one specific way: generation and playback are unlimited on the web plans, and credits are only consumed when you download. You can audition a script twenty ways and pay for one. The caps live elsewhere — monthly download credits (expressed as minutes of audio), avatar generation counts, voice cloning slots on higher plans — and in a split personality: the studio and the developer API are separate subscriptions whose credits do not carry over, which developers should know before building on the wrong one.
How Typecast works
- 1Create a free account, open the text-to-speech studio and pick a voice actor whose tone fits the project — filter by use case and personality.
- 2Paste your script and generate; playback is unlimited, so audition emotions, speeds and emphasis until the read is right.
- 3Adjust the performance controls — emotion, speed and dynamics — per line rather than accepting a single flat read.
- 4If the video needs a presenter, spend an avatar generation to pair the voice with a talking avatar clip.
- 5Download the takes you will actually use — downloads are what consume your monthly credits (about 5 free minutes on the free plan, roughly 35+ minutes from Basic upward).
- 6For production at scale, evaluate the separate API plans rather than stretching the studio subscription.
Core features
700+ expressive voices
A large actor library across personalities, tones and use cases, generated by the SSFM model family with multilingual support — 35+ languages per Typecast's own description — and context-aware emotion in the current generation.
Emotion and performance control
Emotion, speed and dynamics are directed per script, which is the difference between a voice that reads your words and one that performs them. Advanced control deepens on the Pro plan and above.
AI talking avatars
Plans include monthly avatar video generations — a small number free to start, rising by tier (10 a month on Basic in published plan details, 50 on Pro, 200 on Business) — turning the same script into a simple presenter clip.
Voice cloning
Custom voice slots arrive on higher plans (1 on Pro, more on Business, with extra slots purchasable), so a channel or brand can narrate in its own cloned voice.
Download-credit billing
Generation and playback are unlimited; downloads consume credits (30,000 a month on Basic rising to 200,000 on Business in the current pricing reads), so experimentation is free and only finished audio is metered.
Developer API
A separate TTS API with its own free and paid tiers, priced per character, for products that need expressive speech programmatically. Studio credits do not transfer to it.
Mobile app
iOS and Android apps generate voiceovers on the go — note that app-store subscription prices can differ from web prices and are managed separately.
The free plan — the full truth
Typecast's free plan is a real working space with a tiny wallet. Generation and playback are unlimited and access to trial voices lets you learn the performance controls properly. But downloads run on 3,000 lifetime credits — about 5 minutes of finished audio, total, not per month — and everything you do download requires attribution. It is enough to voice one short video and decide whether the emotion control is as good as claimed.
Commercial use is the second boundary: published plan details put the commercial licence on the paid plans, starting with Basic. At $5/month billed annually — with about 30,000 download credits a month — Basic is priced like a coffee, which makes the free plan's role clear: it is a demo with unusually generous auditioning, and the moment Typecast becomes part of a publishing workflow, Basic is the honest entry point.
- • Free downloads total about 5 minutes (3,000 lifetime credits, not monthly)
- • Attribution is required on all free-plan downloads
- • Free access is to trial voices, not the full 700+ library
- • Only the first few avatar generations are free
- • Commercial licence begins with the paid plans
Typecast pricing plans

| Basic | $5/month billed annually | 30,000 download credits/month; all voices; commercial licence | The publishing entry point for narration-led creators |
| Plus | $19/month billed annually | 40,000 download credits/month | Regular creators who need more finished minutes |
| Pro | $29/month billed annually | 75,000 download credits/month; advanced voice control; 1 cloning slot; more avatar generations | Channels built around a consistent or cloned voice |
| Business | $69/month billed annually | 200,000 download credits/month; more cloning slots; credit top-ups | Teams and heavy narration volume |
Plan figures are from Typecast's official pricing page as read in Nov 2026 (annual billing shown; monthly billing is higher — older published monthly figures were $8.99 Basic, $32.99 Pro, $89.99 Business — and app-store prices may differ). The task research for this batch cited an older Basic/Advanced structure at $15/$39; the current pricing page uses Basic/Plus/Pro/Business, and the current figures are the ones listed here. API plans are separate and not listed.

- ✕ Anyone expecting the free plan to sustain a publishing schedule
Typecast alternatives
See all alternatives →ElevenLabs is the heavyweight alternative in our catalogue: the realism benchmark for AI speech, with cloning and dubbing and a $5 Starter tier, though without Typecast's avatar generations. Murf AI is the calmer business studio — fewer theatrics, cleaner workflow for corporate voiceover. And if the voice is only half the job and you need the presenter too, HeyGen pairs expressive avatars with strong voice and translation features. Typecast's niche is the voice performance itself, with avatars as a bonus rather than the main act.
HeyGen
HeyGen turns a script into a video of a realistic digital presenter, with a large avatar library, voice cloning and translation features. It is widely used for marketing videos, product explainers and social content where a human-like presenter is needed without filming.
Synthesia
Synthesia is an enterprise-focused avatar video platform used heavily for training and internal communication. It offers a large stock avatar library, personal avatars, multi-language narration and compliance and admin features that larger organisations require.
D-ID animates a still photo or avatar into a speaking presenter and is well known for its API, which businesses use to generate personalised talking videos at scale. It also offers a studio for individual creators making presenter content cheaply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Typecast free?
There is a free plan with unlimited generation and playback, but only about 5 minutes of downloads in total (3,000 lifetime credits) and attribution is required on downloads. It is an audition tier, not a production tier.
How much does Typecast cost?
On annual billing: Basic $5/month, Plus $19, Pro $29 and Business $69, with monthly download credits from 30,000 to 200,000. Monthly billing is higher, and API plans are priced separately.
Can I use Typecast commercially?
Published plan details include a commercial licence on the paid plans starting at Basic. Free-plan downloads require attribution and are positioned for trial use — do not build a monetised channel on them.
Does Typecast make videos or just audio?
Both: audio is the core, and plans include monthly AI talking-avatar generations, so a script can also become a simple presenter video. For elaborate avatar productions, a dedicated avatar platform is stronger.
Typecast or ElevenLabs?
ElevenLabs leads on raw realism, cloning ecosystem and dubbing. Typecast leads on directed emotion per line and adds avatar generations to the same subscription. Voice-first creators should audition both free tiers with the same script.
